I haven't been able to hear the difference in the A/B of a good mp3 and an HD for a decade. To my ears, born in the '50's, the sound quality is excellent - only my piece of mind would be happier if they were available in a lossless format. Yes, they are mp3's with bit rates between 190 and 260 with most in the cuts in the upper-middle of the range. I frequent the lounge sections in record stores hoping for more in the Ultra Lounge and other series - better late than never in stumbling upon these in an internet search. I can't believe these came out in 2009 and I am only just discovering them. I nabbed 'em all and absolutely love them. I just discovered the 10 additional Ultra-Lounge albums available only as mp3 downloads at Amazon. The Bubbling, Space-Age Bachelor Pad Sound of "Exotica" The Weirdest Music Genre From The 20th Century Is All About "Exotic" Places Here are some articles for further reading. So, what ultra lounge albums are you currently listening to? Please share your favorites or recommendations with others. In advance please let me apologize if this question offends anyone.) (While doing research for this thread I found an article suggesting that exotica may be considered culturally insensitive. During this time of quarantine, I have found great joy and escape in the refreshing sounds of albums like Le Sacre Du Sauvage by Les Baxter and Martin Denny's aforementioned Exoticaas well as the works of Esquivel and the vocal stylings of Dean Martin 's internationally themed albums such as Cha Cha de Amor. I have been a big fan of the Ultra Lounge series that Capitol Records released in the mid-1990s since its inception. Although there is no exact album, date, or year when the genre was born, producer Irwin Chusid identifies its heyday as "roughly 1954 to 1963-from the dawn of high-fidelity (hi-fi) to the arrival of the Beatles."" Space age pop was inspired by the spirit of those times, an optimism based on the strong post-war economy and technology boom, and excitement about humanity's early forays into space. It is also called bachelor pad music or lounge music. " Space age pop is a subgenre of pop and easy listening music associated with Mexican and American composers and songwriters in the space age of the 1950s and 1960s. In the 21st century, the term lounge music may also be used to describe the types of music played in hotels (the lounge, the bar), casinos, supermarkets, several restaurants, and piano bars." The earliest type of lounge music appeared during the 1920s and 1930s, and was known as light music. The range of lounge music encompasses beautiful music–influenced instrumentals, modern electronica (with chillout, and downtempo influences), while remaining thematically focused on its retro-space-age cultural elements. It may be meant to evoke in the listeners the feeling of being in a place, usually with a tranquil theme, such as a jungle, an island paradise or outer space. " Lounge music is a type of easy listening music popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Denny described the musical style as "a combination of the South Pacific and the Orient.what a lot of people imagined the islands to be 's pure fantasy though." While the South Seas forms the core region, exotica reflects the "musical impressions" of every place from standard travel destinations to the mythical "shangri-las" dreamt of by armchair safari-ers." The musical colloquialism exotica means tropical ersatz, the non-native, pseudo experience of insular Oceania, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, the Amazon basin, the Andes, the Caribbean and tribal Africa. " Exotica is a musical genre, named after the 1957 Martin Denny album of the same title that was popular during the 1950s to mid-1960s with Americans who came of age during World War II.
